Abstract

Warrior and lawmaking women fascinated the 18th century. To describe the lair sex's redoubtable power, authors wrote in different genres: tragedies (Houdar de La Motte, Du Bocage), comedies and opéra-comiques (Le Sage and d'Orneval, Fuzelier and Legrand, Marivaux, Le Maingre du Bouciqualt, Léger), ballets and operas, novels (Rustaing de Saint-Jorry, Le Suire) and fairytales (Fénelon, Moncrif, L'Héritier de Villandon, Hurtaut), not forgetting poems and odes (Voltaire), travel narratives, historical treatises and memoirs. The topos of the isle of Amazons is a means of presenting a new and paradoxical society, of depicting France ironically or describing a distant land, whether America or Russia. Writers used the antique myth with political, utopian and satirical aims. Amazons seduce and terrify. Rebel women subjugate men, enslave them and confer domestic tasks on them, committing themselves to war and jurisprudence. They organise their society like an army based on discipline and hierarchy. Pirate women transform their islands into male harems and schools for female government. They fight for the rights of women, victims in the West and slaves in the East, for freedom and the equality of the sexes, for the right to education and the exercise of public office in all fields. The authors who describe this world turned upside down mock feminine pretensions whilst formulating vindications which the future was to satisfy.
